Branding for REALTORS® Part 2 – What Are Your Personal And Business Values?

Your values are the beliefs that underpin your behavior. Ethical decision-making often involves weighing values against each other and choosing which values to elevate. Conflicts can result when people have different values, leading to a clash of preferences and priorities.

Some values have intrinsic worth, such as love, truth, and freedom. Other values, such as ambition, responsibility, and courage, describe traits or behaviors that are instrumental as a means to an end.

Still other values are considered sacred and moral imperatives for those who believe in them. Sacred values are seldom compromised because they are perceived as duties rather than factors to consider in decision-making. For example, some people feel their nation’s flag is a sacred value, while others view it as a piece of cloth.

Knowing your values can be a powerful tool for navigating your personal and professional life with purpose and making decisions that align with your sense of identity. Here’s a process to help you define your value system:

  1. Self-Reflection

  • Positive Experiences: Recall moments when you felt fulfilled, empowered, or excited. What values were present in those situations? (e.g., achievement, creativity, collaboration)
  • Challenging Experiences: Reflect on when you felt uncomfortable or out of alignment. What values were missing or compromised? (e.g., integrity, respect, honesty)
  • Role Models: Who do you admire and why? What values do they embody that resonate with you?
  1. Exploration

  • Value Lists: Utilize pre-made lists of values (e.g., online inventories, books) to spark ideas and identify potential values.
  • Brainstorming: Create your list of values that come to mind without judgment.
  • Sorting and Prioritizing: Group similar values together and choose the top 5-10 that resonate most deeply with you.
  1. Defining and Refining

  • Write it down: Write down each value and define it in your own words. What does it mean to you in practice?
  • Create scenarios: Imagine situations where you might need to choose between values. Which one would you prioritize, and why?
  • Seek feedback: Discuss your values with trusted friends, family, or mentors for different perspectives.
  1. Living Your Values

  • Make conscious choices: Align your decisions and actions with your identified values.
  • Seek opportunities: Actively pursue experiences that embody your values.
  • Reflect and revise: Regularly revisit your values as you grow and evolve.

Additional Tips

  • Be honest and authentic. This is about discovering your values, not what you should value.
  • Embrace growth. Your values may change over time, and that’s okay!
  • Don’t overthink it. Start with a simple list and refine it as you go.
  • Make it visual: Create a vision board or other visual representation of your values for inspiration.

Remember, this is a personal journey. Take your time, explore different tools and practices, and most importantly, have fun discovering who you are!
